Floral Wedding Traditions Around the World
Sweden
Rather than wearing a veil, traditional Swedish brides wear flower crowns contrived of native wildflowers and Myrtle to symbolize innocence. These crowns were intended to ward off evil spirits for the bride. Instead of holding a basket of flower petals, flower girls in Sweden carry a bouquet of herbs and seasonal flowers to ward off evil spirts as well! Lavender and Tulips (if in season) are a popular combination. Lastly, unlike American bouquet throwing, Swedish brides keep their bouquets.
England
Roses are the most popular flowers across the U.K. Throwing bouquets overhead is believed to be originated from England. Women would try to tear piece of the flowers apart for good luck or a chance of finding love. The brides then began to throw bouquets into the crowd and run. After the wedding, the newlyweds would be given a young Rose bush to plant at home. The Rose symbolizes happiness and beauty while the thorns represent the trials experienced.
India
Like Sweden, India traditionally strays from veils or bouquets, instead they have floral garlands, also known as “Jaimalas.” Both the bride and groom wear these garlands with the common color themes of red, yellow, and orange. These vibrant garlands are typically made with vibrant Disbud Mums, Freesias, Jasmine or Carnations. With Western influence meeting the East, many Indian weddings include Delphinium, Marigold and various Roses.
Italy
Traditional Italian (Sicilian) weddings would have orange bouquets to represent fertility however, modern Italian weddings include their national flower- the Lily! White Lilies are popular among weddings along with white Peonies and Roses. Rather than tin cans tied to the couple’s car, Italian couples may place a beautiful arrangement on the front. This symbolizes the newlywed’s happy path of marriage ahead.
Mexico
In Mexico, traditional weddings are based around the Catholicism. The bride may carry two bouquets- one for herself and one for the Virgin Mary. The bride will pick a “madrina de ramo,” to carry her second bouquet after the Virgin Mary offering. Traditional Mexican weddings may also have a floral garland called a “lasso.” This infinity-shaped garland is worn together by the couple. Mexican weddings can have a modern white theme or very vibrant colored theme. Popular flowers for these garlands and bouquets are Marigolds, Dahlias, white Roses, Birds of Paradise, and Monstera. These make such a beautiful and vivacious combination.
Greece
It is believed that flowers used in weddings started in Greece! Corsages were worn by Roman/Grek soldiers to ward off bad spirits. Wreaths were also worn by brides to symbolize mother nature and commitment. Like Sweden, Grecians will wear floral crowns called “Stefanas.” These crowns were usually made of Olive branches, herbs, pearls or ribbons. Common flowers found in bouquets or ceremonies are Italian Ruscus, Gypsophila, and white Roses.
Scotland
Nordic cultures would include one stem of Thistle in their bouquets. Thistle is the flower of Scotland, and it is thought to bring an abundance of luck and happiness. Lavender would sometimes be included in bouquets as well for love and devotion!
