Dutch Iris

Here at Derita Floral we love supporting local farms and bringing in fresh local product. From February to the end of May, we source Dutch Iris from a grower in coastal southeast North Carolina. Dutch Iris, or Iris x hollandica is a hybrid bred from species native to Spain, Portugal and North Africa. The high quality bulbs can produce plants up to 24” tall and make an excellent cut flower for the floral industry.

Iris are one of the few flowers which appear naturally blue thanks to their ability to modify a red pigment called anthocyanin. When left out in normal room temperature conditions, Dutch Iris take a few days to fully open. A fully open bloom consists of three outside sepals (sometimes called “falls”) that reveal a bright golden stripe called a “signal.” The signal acts as a landing pad for bees and other pollinators. Inside, three curved petals arch upward from the center where the nectar and pollen are located.  This unique shape was the inspiration for the iconic French fleur de lis.

Derita sources our Dutch iris in shades of purple, blue, yellow and white. The iris are cut, processed and shipped overnight in order to ensure they reach us in the freshest condition possible. There is nothing quite like fresh cut iris to add to your spring arrangements. You can feel good about the quality and support local farms while adding beautiful color and character to your coolers!
